Having a Small Business is a Blessings
It was one of those mornings, I woke up tired and still feeling completely drained. All I wanted to do was pull the covers back over my head and stay in bed all day. It was a whoas me and life + work is just to hard kinda day.
Why… because I was up all night with non stop thoughts of trying to buy the perfect home, how to build a home, and all this along with thoughts of could our business thrive if we find a home that is an hour further into the mountains. It was basically non stop thought after thought. By the way I am one of those people who thinks about over thinking! I could not sleep. Those nights are rare for me – like once a year – but never any fun. And if those nights are common for you – know that your are in my prayers!
After forcing myself to get out of bed, drinking some tea and heading to the church for morning mass I finally got my head on right. During my morning workout I realized I was totally missing my blessing and getting overwhelmed by house buying and the business end of our photography business.
Have you ever been overwhelmed by the business end of photography? We get it, we have totally been there too. Obviously even after 8 years of business we still get overwhelmed at times. So how does one get their head on strait and pick back up the courage to keep going.
“YOU COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS.”
1. We still love what we do! We work together from our home and do what we love. That is a huge blessing. Truth: In small business, there are always struggles and constantly new things to learn. 8 years, 10 years, 15 years and even 20 years in you will still be learning and still facing challenges. With that in mind breathe in deeply with us and think growth. Truth: The best businesses are always solving problems, excepting challenges, and learning new things because they’re always setting their sights on new horizons. The words “we’ve made it” will most likely never come out of a great businesses mouth.
2. We are thankful for challenges. CRAZY… may be not. We constantly remind ourselves that new challenges mean our business is growing. And the more problems we solve the faster it will grow. As a husband and wife team we have had to learn to work really well together to over come challenges and solve problems. It’s ben a blessing for both our business and our marriage. God will never give you more then you can handle.
1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
3. Community over competition. This saying has been around forever and in the last few years the Rising Tide Society has coined the term and we couldn’t be happier. At times owning our own business felt extremely lonely – as if there is no one who knew what we were going through. But guess what there is. All we had to do was simply look to other businesses that were doing the same thing as us. And we needed to look at them as potential friends – not competition. So over the years we have learned how to work with, be friends with and develop a real community with other small businesses that do the same thing we do. This has helped our business grow tremendously! No matter what you do – you can find and become friends with someone else who does that too.
4. Experience has made us stronger. Experience is such a blessing and the only way to obtain it is by not giving up. It is so easy to look at a successful person or business and assume it all came easy for them. We think they were in the right place at the right time or fait was just handed to them. Truth: This is rarely the case. Everyone has challenges to over come and problems to solve – we may not see them but they are there! They pushed through, we push through and you can push through too. YOU GOT THIS BOO!
