You may be thinking… how the heck can you capture moments rather then recreating them when you shooting romantic posed photos? I totally get it. This took Brandon and I some time to perfect, when we first started we noticed that some of our photos looked so natural and relaxed when other photos at that same shoot looked frozen and over posed. So during our first year in business we really took the time to hone in on how to achieve that natural organic look every time.
5 Tips to capture the romantic photos as they unfold
1. Get to know your couples love story. For us one of the keys to how we capture organic natural shots is knowing who are clients are, how they interact as a couple and what makes then laugh. Yes, people skills. We take the time to invest in our clients personally. This way when we are shooting just the two of them in the middle of a huge open field, on a pier overlooking the ocean or in the middle of a busy city street they feel relaxed. We learn what makes them laugh so we can bring out their true smiles + joy during the shoot. And we learn their love story so we can bring out the deep emotion of love they share as they gaze into each others eyes.
2. Walking our clients into a pose. Often time Brandon and I will set our clients up at a distance from each other and walk them into the final pose we want to achieve. This allows for our couples to move freely with an end goal in mind that they can reach in any playful, romantic or sassy way they would like. We have found that when a couple is given this freedom to move we end up with photos that are so authentic to who they truly are.
3. Talk and walk. Brandon and I like to stay on the move during the romantic shots. For instance if a venue has a little lake, some wooded area and a field of flowers we will use all three locations. This gives us a good variety of beautiful backgrounds in the romantic photos but it also gives us time to talk and walk with our clients. It also gives then a little 5 min break from being in front of the camera. We use this time to ask them about what has been their most memorable experience so far of their wedding day, what does it feel like to be husband and wife, or what are y’all doing for your honeymoon. This keeps that relaxed easy breezy feel to the shoot.
4. Be ready to be silly. I think if you talk to any of our clients they will say we make them laugh, usually because we are good at laughing at our selves. We are huge fans of never taking ourselves to seriously. We have both tripped over rocks, holes in the ground or our own feet while on a shoot. We have bumped heads with each other, stumble over words or said something that could have been a “that’s what she said moment“. We have sat on wet benches to dry them off for our couples, picked sand burs off our brides bare feet, you name it we have done it. And usually these small little blunders give way to belly aching laughter. And yes we encourage the laughter, because life is way too short to not laugh at the little comical things that happen, PLUS our couples laughter makes excellent “in the moment” photos.
5. Be ready to do what every you are asking your client to do. I am a very visual person and I always talk with my hands. However, when I am with clients I get to talk with my entire body. Yep, I know, as soon as I wrote it I though to my self that sounds weird… but its true. When I explain to a couple that I am going to walk them into a pose and how I would like the final out come to look I act it out with Brandon so they have a good idea of how it works. I add a little “silly” and playfulness in there too.
